Today’s challenge: Create an outline for your book, blog or story.
Always start with an outline, no matter what you want to write. Writing a book without an outline is like starting a business without a business plan. You simply start writing and hope for the best. While there’s no denying that you can indeed write a book this way, (I have) it is not in your best interest. It is easy to overlook ideas and make assumptions about your topic or even the way your readers will connect with your content. Outlining helps avoid these mistakes and also saves you time.
Have you ever started to write about something specific but ended up with loads of notes and piles of content that didn’t go anywhere? That probably happened because you didn’t organize your thoughts and ideas beforehand. One of the best ways to write is to create an outline.
- An outline gives you a bird’s eye view of your message.
- It helps you stay organized.
- It keeps you on track.
It doesn’t matter what you want to write, start with an outline. Have a plan for your content. Break down your ideas as much as you can and tackle them one at a time. Before you know it, you would have gone farther than you ever imagined. But first, you have to start. So go!

If you’ve already started writing but are stuck and don’t know how to move ahead, I suggest you revisit your outline. If you didn’t create one before you started writing, it’s never too late. Doing this will give you a fresh perspective and help you chart a course as you move forward.
