So you want to write a book?
You think about it often and write it in your goals every New Year, but you’ve done nothing so far. Or maybe you have some content, a few chapters, or blog posts you plan to re-purpose into a book, but the process has gone nowhere. You’re stuck and don’t even know how to move forward. I understand. Writing takes discipline, focus, and most importantly, a plan.
Welcome to the 5 Day Challenge that will put you on track to bringing your dreams to life.
Today’s challenge: Get clear on your abilities and skills.
I want you to think about this: Am I a writer? Or do I just want to tell my story?
Why should you start with this? Because some people can write, and have a desire to write while others have a message or an idea but cannot write (or are not writers per se). The former must write. The latter can always get someone to write for them. Make sense?
Knowing your strengths and abilities is a great way to start. If you are a writer (or at least on the journey to being confident enough to call yourself one), then you have no excuse. Yes! You’ve got to write that book, or it’ll keep making it to your goal list every year without fail. It’ll never let you go. So do it.
If you’re not a writer (which typically means you cringe every time you think of sitting alone and typing away) but you have a message, a story or something you want to say, think about this. Aside from writing a book, in what other ways can you get your message out or document your story? A video blog? Speaking, maybe?
If you find no other medium that interests you and you still want to write a book, there are two things to consider.
- Work with someone who can write your book for you. It’s called Ghostwriting. No, it’s not a crime and no its not being deceptive or misleading. If you use a ghostwriter, you will still be the author of your book and, depending on the terms of the agreement, the story and rights remain yours.
- Work with people who can guide you through the process e.g. a writing coach, a transcriptionist, an editor, in short, an army of individuals (sometimes rolled into one) who can help you make your book a reality.
So where do you fall? Are you a writer who is struggling to write or a non-writer that just wants to tell a story or spread a message? Or are you somewhere in between?
Your Action Plan:
Think through the process and decide what works for you.

May all your dreams come true, with pomp and splendor!
